10 – 4 Tuesday

15 May

Welcome to 10 – 4 Tuesday!  This is a forum where we’ll feature either an author or someone in a position related to publishing, promoting or a service that is author related.  I will only be offering this forum on occasion, and if anyone wants to participate, email me to set up a date 🙂

For 10 – 4 Tuesday I will ask our guest 10 questions about themselves and their service and then 4 questions for fun 🙂  So let’s get started.

Today I’d like to feature Nikki Barrett, founder of Storm Goddess Book Review.  Not only do her interests consists of reading and writing, she has several other fun things she likes to do (you’ll see below).  And on a more personal note, since meeting her she’s become my partner in crime on Words with Friends…lol…we both need counseling for our game issues. 🙂

Hi Nikki, thanks for joining us for 10 – 4  Tuesday 🙂

First the 10:

To start out, tell us a bit about yourself.

Oh my, I have to talk about me? Umm ok…I’m Nikki. I’m a wife to a great husband, a mom to a rambunctious and happy 3 year old boy. I’m an aspiring author, I’m a blogger, an online used bookstore owner, an avid lover of weather and photography. I love music of all kinds, love to sing…I could go on, but let’s just say I’m eclectic in my interests and there’s so much that I strive to do!  Oh, and I’m severely addicted to word games, such as Words With Friends. I have to have my daily fix!  No intervention needed. I will go down fighting, with a game of Words With Friends next to me!

LOL…me too!  What made you decide to start your own book review website?

I started reviewing for my first time 2 years ago for a small company that started up. I enjoyed the fact that I got to read new and different books, in exchange for a review. I’m a stay at home mom, and I needed some things to fill my day that I could do along with watching my Little Man grow. I’d debated on starting my own blog for awhile. I liked that authors were so ecstatic over a simple thing as a great review. It meant to them that someone loved their hard work and efforts, and I wanted to give more of that.

How do you go about choosing books to review & feature?

At first, I just posted reviews of books that I read on my own and enjoyed. I was new, didn’t have much exposure and no one was really going to take a chance on a blog they’d never heard of.  Then I sent out what I call “Call outs”. I promoted in Yahoo groups, and on Facebook that I had a new blog and would love to host authors. I had a few bites, and it went from there. Now, I work with different virtual tour companies, I know different authors from being in critique groups, and the word is starting to spread. I have a review database because authors are submitting review requests, and I pick books to review that are in my genres to read. I have branched out so much ever since reviewing!

How many books a week do you feature on your website?

It could be anywhere from five or more. I’ve been getting to the point where I’m making two posts or more each day, and I do feature weekend posts.

Can an author email you directly to request a review—or how would they go about it?

Absolutely! I have many ways to be contacted! My email-

I have a form on my website to submit review requests, although I do need to edit it. I was just learning the whole Google docs thing and I didn’t make it easy on myself when recording the information! Lol. But here is the current form:

I noticed that recently you’ve added on other reviewers, so you’re expanding. Congratulations.  How many reviewers do you have now?

I think we’re at 8, including myself…I’m waiting for a few replies from some that have inquired.

If someone wanted to be one of your select reviewers, how would that process work?

I have a submit form for that, too! I ask for a review sample, so I could get a feel for the reviewers writing. Then I email them and give them the lowdown of how things work on the blog, attach a reviewers information packet, and if they agree, I invite them to the loop where the databases are stored. Or, again, one could email me directly. I’ve done a few calls outs via social networking and yahoo groups that we are looking for reviewers, and have had a few responses via that way.

I’ve also noticed on your awesome website that you do author interviews, do you always coincide that with a review or will you interview an author without reviewing their book?

Oooh, she said awesome….Oh, sorry! I got distracted! LOL No, author interviews or guest posts, or even character interviews don’t have to coincide with a review. Each can be stand alone. You don’t have to have a review to be featured, and you don’t have to be featured with anything else if you just want a review. I’m flexible and work with authors to get what they want out of the experience.

When asked to review a book, do you purchase the book or does the author provide a copy for you?

I’ve always had authors willingly offer up a copy of the book. I’ve reviewed books that I have purchased and send them a link when it was posted, and I’ve had a few appearances from authors that when I finished reading one of their books, I emailed them and told them I enjoyed it, and that I would love to host them on the blog for a guest post or interview, and then posted the review with it. So I guess it just depends on the situation.

Do you charge to review books?

Absolutely not! That’s free of charge. No one has to pay to be featured for a review. I am looking to expand my services, some including ad space, which that may be a small fee, but I’m still working out details on that. I would never want to charge a ridiculous amount for anything, let alone something that shouldn’t have a cost, such as reviewing.

Now the 4:

If you could be any cartoon character, who would you choose and why?

Storm! From X-Men….and do I really need to explain why? <grin>

LOL…nope I don’t need you to explain!  Share your favorite quote (or if you don’t have one…feel free to make one up)

Umm…it varies….although lately, I’ve been a sarcastic one and if someone in my family says something along the lines of “I’m thinking”, I either say “That’s dangerous” Or “You don’t get paid to think” LOL We usually have quips and sarcastic banter going back and forth in the Barrett household (all said in love, Honest!)

I’m a huge fan of a bit of sarcasm 🙂  Let’s say the President asked you to come up with a National Holiday!  What would you choose and why?  (remember, everyone would get the day off to celebrate!)

Wait, my birthday doesn’t count? Hmm…..How about National Pamper yourself with Books day? LOL

Sounds good to me!  What’s your favorite breakfast food?

Breakfast? Umm….I love hamsteak. Some say that isn’t a breakfast food, but I beg to differ! As I tell my husband, they serve it in the buffet at Golden Corral breakfast, so it’s breakfast food, darn it!

Thanks again for visiting with us Nikki!  And for being a good sport 🙂  I’m so excited you joined me for 10 – 4 Tuesday!  Before we wave buh-bye, please share the links to your website and any other links we might find interesting so we can stalk you online 🙂

Hi Christine! It’s nice to meet you, Nikki! 🙂 In my house I often respond to the “I’m thinking” with *Does it hurt?* lol

You mentioned that you only review in genres that you like. Can you tell us which genres that would be? For instance, if I submitted my vintage novella, a 1967-set historical (considered contemporary in some venues), would that be one you’d consider?

    • ChristineWarner

      May 15, 2012 at 8:56 am

Thanks for coming by Calisa! Nikki should be on a bit later and she’ll get your question answered…in the interim, check out her website…it’s fantastic!

    • Nikki Barret

      May 15, 2012 at 2:26 pm

Nice to meet you too, Calisa! Heehee….your name, well that’s the name of the heroine in my current Work in Progress. 🙂

I say Does it hurt as well? My husband usually knows my quips and will respond accordingly before i Even have to say the line! LOL

While I do reviews in my preferred genres (Only because if it’s outside my genre I may not be able to give it a fair review, though I do take many chances, as I am becoming more eclectic), I have a team of reviewers that read some of the other genres that I don’t, so we’re spread pretty wide on what people read. Though I enjoy books that are recent historicals, and I’ve read books set in the 1960’s. I would most definitely consider it!

  8. Callie Hutton

    May 15, 2012 at 12:47 pm

Very interesting. I second Calisa. I’d like to know what she considers her genre.

    • Nikki Barret

      May 15, 2012 at 2:32 pm

Hi Callie! Thanks for stopping by!

Okay, you asked for it! 🙂

I read many genres of romance- contemporary, suspense, paranormal, urban fantasy, sci/fi, fantasy, YA, some historical. I read thrillers, suspense, mystery, comedy, chick lit, women’s fiction, general fiction, erotic romances, horror….really the list goes on. I go by the blurb of the book mainly, even if it’s not a genre I have read in or normally read in, if the blurb catches my eye enough I am there!

Hey, Nikki–I was doing spring cleaning today too. I think I’m done for the day though. The outside is calling me now.

    • Nikki Barrett

      May 15, 2012 at 2:40 pm

Aww, I love you too Brenda! Glad you stopped by. Oh, I’m never done cleaning, but I really needed to hit some of this hard. I’m still trying to get organized (And clean) since the A/c installation last month. I’m not going outside as it’s 106 here today, I think. I’ll stay in my cooled 70 house LOL

    Hi, Nikki!
Super interview! I was a reviewer for a breif time, like two books, and found it very stressful, so I quit. I admire those of you who do it. Nice line of work.

    • Nikki Barrett

      May 15, 2012 at 3:27 pm

Hey D’Ann! Thanks for stopping by. It can get stressful at times, there’s a lot of work and organization involved, but I’m enjoying it 🙂

        May 15, 2012 at 5:46 pm

You do an amazing job Nikki…all of your reviews are right on too…I’ve found some wonderful authors on your site that I would’ve missed.

Oooh, great interview, ladies! Nikki, I am a fellow dabbler in sarcasm. (My husband may beg to differ, but I feel it suits me well. … Or maybe he’d agree. I’m not sure which side of “trick question” that might fall under, lol.) If I did not have to constantly struggle for authoring time, I would love to review. Oh, the POWER you hold! *grins*

    • Nikki Barrett

      May 16, 2012 at 2:23 am

The Storm Goddess LOVES having power!! LOL. I write too, but I have a three year old at home and it makes it a little harder. I don’t get to write every day, and I’ve allowed myself to accept that. He will be going to a special preschool in August, and for those hours I’ll devote time to writing. At least I can do blogging while he’s around, that doesn’t take as much concentration and thought as it does to pound out the words LOL.

And, if the power ever takes over, there’s always a place for you on my review team!

As for sarcasm, I live in a house full of them. Hubby and I are always making sarcastic comments at one another- it’s perfect!!

      Thanks for stopping by!

    • ChristineWarner

      May 16, 2012 at 6:11 am

Thanks again Nikki for joining us on 10 – 4 Tuesday. I had a great time and hope you did too!

  17. Ally Broadfield

    May 16, 2012 at 7:30 pm

Fabulous interview, ladies. I am firmly in the sarcasm camp, as well. My husband keeps chastising me for turning our three children into my sarcastic minions. He doesn’t seem to understand that’s what I was trying to do. Hopefully I’ll soon have a book to submit for review, but in the meantime I’ll enjoy your reviews and discover some more wonderful books to read.

    • ChristineWarner

      May 17, 2012 at 9:16 am

I think a little sarcasm is fun…nothing like laughter 🙂 As long as it’s meant in fun anyway.

Thanks for coming by Ally…and I have no doubt you’ll have a book out soon!
