10 – 4 Tuesday

05 Jun

Welcome to 10 – 4 Tuesday!  This is a forum where we’ll feature either an author or someone in a position related to publishing, promoting or a service that is author related.  I will only be offering this forum on occasion, and if anyone wants to be featured, email me to set up a date 🙂

For 10 – 4 Tuesday I will ask our guest 10 questions about themselves and their service and then 4 questions for fun 🙂  So let’s get started.

Today I’d like to feature Florence Price who is a virtual assistant.  Her site, MY GIRL FRIDAY, is awesome and a virtual haven for all authors 🙂   Florence is offering a giveaway to one lucky commenter…so don’t forget to leave a comment & your email address to be eligible.

Hi Florence, thanks for joining us for 10 – 4  Tuesday 🙂

First the 10:

To start out, tell us a bit about yourself.

Oh boy…Well, in my past professions I’ve been a bookkeeper, an executive assistant, a paralegal and the director of PR for a small press publishing company. I live in Michigan, which is awesome because, in addition to all the fresh air and the beautiful four seasons we experience, Mackinac (Mackinaw) Island is my absolute favorite vacation location! I’m married with three kids (two of them still at home). Oh, and we have two very spoiled pets, Ellie (border collie/Australian shepherd mix) and Olivia (our fat black rescue kitty). I’m a Sci-Fi Geek and also an unpublished author. My current WIP is a Celtic YA Fantasy set in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

What exactly is a virtual assistant and how do your services help authors?

A Virtual Assistant is someone who usually works out of her home performing various tasks and services via computer and internet, and not all Virtual Assistants work with authors. My services, however, are geared toward helping authors free up more of their time to concentrate on their writing and to help promote their books.

What are some of the services you offer?

I’m pretty much a Jill-of-All-Trades. I design and maintenance websites, supervise social media venues, produce book trailers, design trading cards, business cards, banners, badges and buttons. If there’s a service that’s not listed on my site, I can either figure out how to accomplish that task or find someone who can help the author with that service. I also spend quite a bit of time doing research in order to keep up with all of the bells and whistles of up-and-coming technology and social media available to authors. Oh, and I hope to very shortly be able to offer author interviews on a Blog Talk Radio Show, so that authors can use the pod cast for promo and/or be able to embed the interview in their website.

Do you offer packages or is everything ala carte?

I do offer monthly retainer packages, and for my clients who sign up for the retainer packages, I offer discounts on my other services, such as designing business or trading cards, banners, etc., but I also offer my services ala carte.

What is a service you offer that you feel sets you apart from other virtual assistants?

I think I’d have to say my book trailer productions. I don’t think there are many VA’s that offer this service. Also, I spend a lot of time on a book trailer to make sure it’s not “cookie-cutter” but it’s a quality trailer that gives an accurate, dynamic and exciting depiction of the book.

You are so creative and have some beautifully crafted websites that you’ve built…but do you also spruce up existing websites?

Absolutely! I’ve actually done exactly that for some of my clients who already have a website that they’re more or less happy with, but just want an update to their design so it reflects their writing more accurately.

If someone wanted to get more information about what you can do to assist them, how would they contact you?

They can contact me directly at or they can go to my website and contact me through the Contact Form.

What is the service that you offer that seems to get the most response or requests?

So far it’s pretty much a tie between website / blog site design and book trailers.

Can you share a price list with us for some of your most popular services?

Sure! I charge $20 per hour for individual tasks such as: Twitter, Facebook, Amazon Author Page, Library Thing, Goodreads and Pinterest setup, design and maintenance; Social Media & Marketing Management; Promotion and Research of promotional materials; and Assistance with a current website / blog site. Business, trading card and banner designs are $35. Or you can sign up for a Retainer Plan of:  5 ~ 10 ~ 20 ~30 ~40 Hours per Month @ $15 per hour / with a 5 hour minimum.

I know that you wanted to offer a free service to one lucky commenter, either a banner design, trading card design or business card design.  Could you please share an example of each?

Now the 4:

If you could invite 5 people from the present or past to a party, who would you invite?

Jane Austen would definitely be my first pick – Didn’t even have to think about that one! Then I’d invite my Grandma Gibson (she passed away when I was 18, and I’d love a chance for just one more hug), then I’d invite Abraham Lincoln, Leonardo da Vinci, and Edgar Cayce.

What’s a talent you don’t have but wish you did?

I’d love to be able to sew my own clothes! Maybe design my own dresses, window dressings, replace zippers or reupholster my furniture. Unfortunately, I suck at sewing. I even own a sewing machine (which is sitting in my office right now collecting dust), but the best I can manage is to repair any minor rips in seams and sew on buttons or Boy Scout badges.

Share something with us that you do when you are alone (like singing in the shower or the car etc).

Oh, I definitely sing in the car. I can’t do that when my sixteen-year-old son’s with me though, because it annoys him. He likes classic rock, which is what I listened to when it wasn’t classic, so I know all the words to all the songs. If I forget, and start singing, he’ll turn the music up to drown me out, the dang whippersnapper!

If we opened your refrigerator right now, what would we find?

Ha – I just went to the grocery store yesterday, so it’s packed! And it’s the beginning of the week, so there’s no real leftovers yet. Five gallons of 2% milk, two cartons of International Delight Iced Coffee (vanilla), two cartons of Chocolate Silk Soy Milk (light), a pitcher of pink lemonade, a container of homemade Hummingbird nectar, six cups of strawberry soy yogurt, a large container of light vanilla Yoplait yogurt, two containers of cottage cheese (the good kind, not the yucky low-fat cottage cheese), a container of sour cream (that’s the good kind too), four cans of diet caffeine-free Pepsi, sliced deli turkey, chicken salad, eggs, two bags of grated sharp cheddar cheese, sliced cheddar and jalapeno cheese, flour tortillas, six ears of corn, a bag of baby carrots, two heads of lettuce, one red pepper, one cucumber, two bags of apples, a bag of grapes, real mayonnaise, three bottles of salad dressing, and an assortment of condiments. And then of course there’s the freezer, but I’ll save that for next time.

Thanks again for visiting 10 –  4 Tuesday Florence and for being a good sport…and for making me hungry by the items in your fridge…lol 🙂  Before we wave good-bye, please share the links to your website and any other links we might find interesting so we can find you online 🙂

Thanks so much for the opportunity to stop by Christine – It was really fun (as always) visiting with you! Here are some of my links:
