Is it Wednesday already? It certainly is…and that means it’s time for What to Read Wednesday.
Today help me welcome back author Nikki Lynn Barrett. She’s sharing an interesting guest post about series books and then an excerpt from her latest release–and the first book in her series–Baby Stetson. On a side note I have to tell you that I loved the blurb and excerpt to this story so much I have already bought my copy and can’t wait to dig in.
And away we go…take it away Nikki…
Hi y’all! I’m Nikki Lynn Barrett, author of The Secret Santa Wishing Well and Baby Stetson.
First, I want to give a big shout out and thank you to Christine for letting me hang out here today. I’m so glad to be back!
I’m going to let you in on a little secret….
I used to not be fond of series books, at least, when it came to romance. I’m not even sure why, because I have been devouring them like crazy! Take for instance, Jaci Burton’s Play by Play books- I absolutely love them! I love the Riley family, and how we get to say hello to characters we’ve loved from prior stories in the series.
Or Maya Banks, her Sweet series? Have mercy, that is one of my favorite series ever, and those were the books that introduced me to the emotional, beautiful side of erotic romance that I had no idea existed before. I love catching up with old favorites, and how they are all friends and still have a great appearance in each book.
Those are just to name a few. Series, trilogies, quartets…I love reconnecting with characters.
I didn’t think I’d be a series writer.
But guess what? I’m writing one!
Baby Stetson is book one in the Love and Music in Texas series. Most of these books will be set in my fictional town of Harmony’s Echo, Texas. But a few of them will not. Regardless, I am enjoying the idea of a series. I had four books planned, but now thinking about expanding that. I am loving Lucas and Avery so much, and Avery’s band Baby Stetson. I have never had characters that continued to call to me after their story was written as much as these two. I’m not ready to let go of Lucas and Avery yet. Not at all.
So the series is centered around lives of the band members from Baby Stetson. Of course, there’s Avery and Lucas first. Avery is the lead singer of Baby Stetson, and her story focuses on a romantic relationship, family ties, and other relationships. There’s a lot going on in the book, but I enjoyed every bit of it. Avery and Jameson, the lead guitarist, used to date, and in the beginning of Baby Stetson, Avery has to finally confront her feelings about something Jameson did a few months ago, which tears her up inside. Jameson is a good guy, and though he made one mistake, I hope readers will welcome him in book two. There’s even a few bonding moments in Baby Stetson between Lucas and Jameson…yes, the ex and the current becoming friends. It can happen!
I’m excited for this series. I love the idea of centering around a band. Baby Stetson is a country music band, and readers can follow their journey from just playing leisurely in Harmony’s Echo to working towards the bigger picture. There are lyrics incorporated in the book that are written by me, and there’s a project in the works that will take some time to get done, but I’m planning on releasing a music CD that goes along with the books. I love music, it’s another calming pass time for me, just as music, and so putting these two together would be amazing for me.
So, what type of series do you love? What draws you to them? Do you love catching up with old, favorite characters as they still have a purpose in future books? Don’t get me wrong, stand alone books are still amazing, heck, if it’s a good story, I’m there!
By the way, speaking of catching up with characters, those that are waiting on a Secret Santa sequel will get to see more of Jacob, Cheyenne, Ben and Desiree hopefully late this fall, when Robin gets her own story. Talk about another couple I can’t stop thinking about. 🙂
I hope you’ll check out Baby Stetson…this book was a blast to write and I’m excited to be working on book 2.
Baby Stetson Blurb:
Love and Music in Texas, Book One
In small Texas towns, strangers come and go…
Left in a Stetson hat, on the steps of the local bed and breakfast, Avery Callimer came into the world on a wing and a prayer. Raised by loving adoptive parents, she’s never lacked for love…only the knowledge of her past.
By day she works the Inn, but by night…Avery comes alive as lead singer in a band. Life was good…stable, until new guests blew into town.
Some strangers come with secrets and lies.
Lucas Bennett is one such stranger. Drifting from one mess to another has left him jaded. Doesn’t matter the dramas are never his doing. Giving it one last shot to make a fresh start lands him Harmony’s Echo, Texas and smack dab in front of the tantalizing Avery.
Despite his best efforts to ignore the burn Avery’s ignited within, he’s intent to keep his distance. Secrets have followed him. Secrets he doesn’t want Avery to know.
Each time they’re near the other things heat up like a brushfire on a dry Texas prairie.
But maybe, after the dust settles and the smoke clears, love can bloom with a fresh start.
“The view is fantastic!” Avery breathed, finally tearing her gaze away from the window and grinning wildly at Lucas.
“It’s always breathtaking,” Lucas admitted. This time was different. He had the chance to share this with her, and the fact that Avery was enjoying so much of it satisfied Lucas. She looked so happy. So beautiful, radiant. Lucas wanted to gather her in his arms and never let go.
“Now you have a look.” Avery’s smile faded and concern filled her eyes. “What’s on your mind, Lucas?”
You. How much I find myself needing you in my life.
“Just thinking about another breathtaking view,” he said easily. She blushed. Lucas laughed. He teased her hair. Avery went to stop him, catching his hand mid air. The sparks ignited again. If only they weren’t in the air, around so many other passengers. Otherwise, he would give into every desire he had at that moment.
He wondered what it would take to convince Avery to go-
No. She doesn’t need that much adventure. Geez. Get a grip on your mind.
Ha. If only.
“Can I get you two anything to drink?” A flight attendant stood at their side, watching them with an amused grin. “Ahh, young love. I remember those days well.” The woman looked to be middle aged, and she had a longing look in her eyes as she darted her gaze between Avery and Lucas.
“I- we’re-” Avery stuttered. She let go of Lucas’s arm, dropping hers to her side.
Lucas had to hold back his laughter at how flustered that comment got her. He just smiled knowingly at the woman.
“Nothing to be ashamed of, honey. I envy you right now. The love of my life, well, I lost him too soon. You enjoy what you have while you can.” The woman smiled. “Anyhow, how about that drink?”
Avery requested a Dr. Pepper and Lucas asked for a Pepsi.
“Be back with those in awhile. Enjoy your flight.” When she walked off to aid another passenger,
Lucas turned back to Avery. She was red faced again.“Did I tell you how cute you are when you’re blushing?” Lucas asked, knowing that it would only make her more embarrassed. On cue, she did. Lucas ducked when she swatted at him.
“You’re enjoying that way too much.” Avery’s eyes narrowed. But when she broke out in a smile, Lucas felt better.
More than you know.
“Maybe so,” Lucas teased. He reached into his pocket for the box he had there. Getting it past security without Avery looking had been easy. She went first and had no idea that Lucas put the box on the belt and grabbed it quickly. He could have given this to her before, or even off the plane, but this was the perfect time. “Avery. I have something for you.”
