BOOK BLAST ~ First to Burn by Anna Richland ~ Giveaway

14 Aug

A Soldier with Secrets.

Immortal Viking Wulf Wardsen once battled alongside Beowulf, and now serves in Afghanistan. He’s trusted the mortal men on his elite special operations team to protect his secret, until an explosion lands Wulf in a place more dangerous to him than a battlefield: a medevac helicopter.

A Doctor with Questions.

Army captain Theresa Chiesa follows the rules and expects the same from others, even special forces hotshots like Sergeant Wardsen. She’s determined to discover the secret behind his supernaturally fast healing, and she won’t allow his sexy smile to distract her.

An Enemy with Nothing to Lose.

Even as Theresa’s investigation threatens to expose him, Wulf dreams of love and a normal life with her. But the lost Viking relic needed to reverse his immortality is being hunted by another—an ancient enemy who won’t hesitate to hurt Theresa to strike back at Wulf.

Author Info

Anna Richland lives with her quietly funny Canadian husband and two less quiet children in a century-old house in Seattle. Like the heroine of FIRST TO BURN, she joined the army to pay tuition, a decision that led to an adventurous career on four continents (if standing on the bridge in Panama that divides North and South America counts as two).

She donates a portion of her book proceeds to the Fisher House Foundation, which provides housing for families of wounded soldiers in the US and Great Britain, and Doctors Without Borders, which delivers emergency medical care in more than sixty crisis zones world-wide.

Thanks, Joye – First to Burn is a sort of hybrid story because it’s paranormal romantic suspense. It starts off on in Afghanistan, where Wulf and Theresa are both deployed, and it’s a military-type story with the paranormal part developing under the surface. I think that if there really were supernatural beings, they’d try very hard NOT to be noticed, because being different has never been very good. (Joan of Arc? Salem witch trials?) So my hero is trying to keep his secret from the nosy army doctor heroine … then they’re on leave in Rome, and boom, it’s a romantic suspense and the paranormal parts ramp up and they’re on the run.

I also have a Thanksgiving novella coming out – of course it releases in October, because November is for Christmas novellas! The novella is called His Road Home, and it’s a military homecoming story, sort of like a shorter Jessica Scott type of romance.

Because early readers loved the other guys on Wulf’s Special Forces team so much (including me!), I had to write a story about one of them – not paranormal, since the other guys were just regular people (as if any SF guys are ‘regular’, but I guess they do put their pants on one leg at a time, like the rest of us). That’s the story that is coming out in October.

I hope you give one of my books a try! Maybe with a coffee or tea drink – good luck!

Christine – that need for secrecy is one of the things that has bugged me in lots of paranormals. I think Charlaine Harris got it right in her Sookie books, that there are a ton of people who would target, picket, try to enact laws against, harass, etc any supernatural beings. “Witch hunt” is a phrase in general usage after all!

So I tried to figure out what my Immortals would do to stay anonymous, and came up with the rules of their clan, about never hurting humans, never interfering with humans, moving on if discovered, etc. While it arises later in First to Burn, due to the slower reveal of Wulf’s immortality to the heroine, those rules become an immediate issue in The Second Lie because bad Immortal Vikings kidnap the heroine in the third chapter.

Oh, Christine … no caffeine? Oh no, I’m going to cry. Even when I was pregnant, my Ob/gyn, like many others in Seattle, told her patients we could have one per day … no other way to get through the long gray days that wrap all around us, today included. I’ve been thinking of getting Vitamin D to add to my coffee. Don’t know if that would work, though.
