Happy Thursday! Please help me welcome debut author Melissa MacKinnon to the blog today. Her first book Return to Me just released on the 19th 🙂 I’m so excited to have her here today. I think you’ll enjoy getting to know her, you’ll drool over her amazing cover, and get pulled into her writing by her blog and excerpt 🙂

Don’t you love this cover? Another one that I could stare at all afternoon 🙂

Enjoy the interview everyone…

Please share with my readers 5 things about yourself.
I majored in theater, and minored in anthropology in college… so basically I majored and minored in unemployment.
I grew up on the oceans of Maine and I hate seafood.
I hate to cook, which doesn’t bode well for a family of seven.
I love anything sour.
Someday I want to own a giraffe.

Love your answers Melissa! I visited Maine and it’s gorgeous…and I loved the seafood…yummers!
Coffee, tea, or something else?

Coffee, please! I’m a starbucks snob. In fact, I just bought a super duper ice cruncher blender to make my own frapps. Those suckers are expensive!
What’s the last book you’ve read?

I just finished The Marriage Agenda by Sarah Balance. ERMAGERD GOOD!

OMG…that book is amazing. Sarah did a fabulous job with the story.
I love choosing my character’s names. Tell us how you came up with the names for your hero and heroine.
Marek means “war-like”, and war is all he’s ever known. It’s in his blood. Brynn means “hill”, and she has one heck of a mountain to overcome. I love pairing names with the character’s journey.
Being that this is your debut book, how long did it take you to write?

Oh boy. Well… I started it sometime around 2004. I picked it up and put it down several times. I was only writing for me. It wasn’t until I mustered up the courage to let an author friend read some of it that I began to think I could make something of it. She is the one who made me finish the darn thing. In 2010. Once I finished it, I trashed the first three chapters and then edited it to pieces.
What genre is Return to Me?
It’s a historical romance with fantasy elements.
Turn to any chapter in your book and choose two sentences you’re particularly proud of.
“She is my constant, the reason my heart
beats. I will die to protect her. Without her, I am nothing.” Okay. So that was three. But they are short, and make me swoon.

They are swoon-worthy!

Is there a ritual you have when writing? For instance do you need to wear a pair of lucky socks, drink a certain beverage, have certain music playing?

I need my tunage! I even have playlists for each chapter. As soon as my jam comes on, I’m in the zone.
Finish this sentence for me….If I had to sum up what Return to Me is about…
It’s about unwavering love and fighting for what you believe in.

Where and when do you write?

Ideally, I write in my bedroom at my writing desk. I even have a plotting cork board hanging on the wall. But these days, I find myself writing wherever I can. I have five kidlets, and three of them play soccer. Toss a teenager into the mix, and I’m seriously on the go six days a week. I bring a pen and paper with me everywhere, and if I know I’m going to be sitting somewhere for at least an hour, the laptop goes with me.

You are very busy! I can’t even imagine having 5 active kids and trying to write on top of everything else life throws our way! Congrats to you for keeping it together 🙂

Can you tell us two things you love about your hero? Your heroine?
I love that Marek puts honor and his family above all else. He sticks to his beliefs and will risk his life to protect those he loves.
I love that Brynn has a solid head on her shoulders and strong-willed. She flourishes once released from the binds of her past

Will you share an excerpt of Return to Me with us?
“Oh, now you want this?” He squeezed the wet fabric in his fingers.
“Not if you’re going to throw it at me.” She pouted, tasting the blood with the tip of her tongue.
“Here, have at it.” Marek handed her the cloth and the water bladder. “When you need my help, I’ll be waiting for your thanks.” Busying himself with the torch, Marek let her be.
The process was slow. Every inch of her ached. What she wouldn’t give for a bath — a proper one. When she was sure she had scrubbed her face thoroughly, Brynn set to work on her arms and legs. Mud resided in every cranny, making her tattered clothing seem like rags themselves.
“Would you care for help now?” he asked, watching her struggle.
“I’m fine.”
“’Tis all right to ask for help.”
“I said I’m fine,” she replied, peeling a section of matted hair from her shoulder. Brynn winced and sucked in a breath through her teeth, trying not to cry out while he was near. “Might I have a bit of privacy, warrior?”
“My name is Marek,” he corrected, “and do not worry — you haven’t anything I have not seen before. I’ve been cleaning those wounds of yours for days now.”
Brynn’s cheeks flushed, and she directed her attention elsewhere, ignoring his shameless stare. She focused on her wounds, keeping her distance.
Near the curtain, Marek unbuckled his belt to remove his tunic. He pulled the fabric over his hand and then down his arms. He stood bare-chested. Brynn averted her eyes.
Marek let out a rumbling laugh. “You are welcome to look, love.”
“I fear the gods will not forgive me if I do,” she whispered.

Love it..thank you for sharing!

What’s the best advice you received on your journey to publication?
To write. Every day, whether it’s five sentences or five pages, just do it. Set aside time for yourself and don’t give that away for anything. You let it slide once, and soon it will become a habit. Take time to work on your craft and don’t feel guilty for doing something you love.

Great advice!

What can we expect next from Melissa McKinnon?
THE ARCHER’S DAUGHTER is on track for release this fall.
England, 1381
Cate Archer is a wanted woman.
When her father is killed during peace negotiations with the young King Richard, she vows she will not rest until she sees her father’s murder avenged, and his killer brought to his knees. She never imagined she would fall in love with the very man who destroyed her life.
Lord Owen Gray has only one task—bring in the rebel leaders. As the son of the Captain of the King’s Guard, he has certain expectations to fulfill, and falling for his prisoner isn’t one of them. He understands her cause; the woman vows to avenge her father’s death, but he cannot bring himself to reveal he is the one who shattered her world. Owen must choose between duty and his heart. The Guard is all he’s ever known. Does he stay true to his oath, or find himself on the next most wanted list?

And finally Melissa, where can we find you?

The only thing worse than loving the enemy is trying to live without him.

Archaean bounty hunter Marek Coinnich isn’t particularly fond of Engels. In fact, he prefers them dead. But to save his injured brother, he must enter the manor of an Engel enemy. Marek finds himself enthralled by the slave girl nursing his brother back to health. When his enchantment with her lands them in a compromising position, he refuses to let the young beauty pay for the misunderstanding with her life.

Brynn of Galhaven prefers to keep to the shadows. When she is ruined by an outsider, she barely escapes with her life and finds herself left alone in an unforgiving land. Through her struggles to survive, Brynn discovers a world she never imagined and never forgets the enemy Archaean who stole her heart.

Marek can’t deny his desire for Brynn, but these are wartimes, and she is the enemy. And though love knows no prejudice, the world in which he lives isn’t nearly as forgiving.

*** Historical Romance with strong Fantasy elements.***
