Take it away Gemma…

Hello, and thank you for inviting me to visit today to talk about Exposed To Passion, Book #3 in The Five Senses Series.

Each of the books in the series is based on one of the senses. Cooking Up Love featured taste, Hearts In Harmony dealt with sound. Exposed is based on sight. I give my heroines a career that is tied to a specific sense. A chef; a music therapist; a photographer. I’m working on a story about a florist right now, which is book #4. I weave as much of the sense into the book as I can, but still focus on the other senses to enrich the reader’s experience and involvement in the story.

I got to thinking about how my five senses effect my perception of the world.Since fall is my favorite time of year, I thought I’d share how each of the senses translates to my world experience.

Sight: I love the colors I see this time of year in the leaves on the trees. I love to drive past a hillside carpeted in reds, oranges, browns and the occasional green from pines. The color repeats often in other things. The sight of gorgeous mums, my favorite flower, bright red apples and pumpkins on display is exciting to me. In Exposed To Passion, Rikki Salerno, a photographer has a similar interest in the beauty of nature.

Sound: Rain pattering on my roof is a soothing sound. The drip of overflow from gutters filled with fallen leaves. The sound of tires splashing on pavement as school busses carry kids out of the neighborhood. I love a rainy day.

Taste: Don’t know about you, but I love all things pumpkin spice. I crave the taste all year long, but especially in the fall as the season shifts and the temperature starts to drop. I have great recipes for pumpkin spice fudge and pumpkin spice truffles. I also have a couple of pumpkin soup recipes I like to unleash on my unsuspecting family. They think I’m crazy, but they don’t complain once that savory bowl of soup is placed under their noses with a piece of crusty bread for dipping. Have I made you hungry? In Exposed To Passion, Rikki Salerno gets to share a seasonal beer with Sam Kerrigan. Even though the story is set in the spring, as I wrote that scene, I was thinking of an October fest kind of brew.

Smell: I adore that first hint of burning leaves and wood smoke. The smell of an apple orchard or farmer’s market this time of year evokes fond memories as a child. We’d rake all the leaves in our huge back yard and jump in them for a while. As soon as we’d exhausted ourselves, we’d head inside for warm apple cider. When Dad got home, we’d rake the pile to the curb and he’d set them on fire (back in the days when that was still acceptable). People don’t burn leaves in the city any more, but I get an occasional whiff of one of the neighbors’ fire pit and it takes me back younger days. I wrote a scene at a campground in Exposed, complete with a campfire, hot coffee and chocolate brownies.

Touch: I drag out my fall sweaters at the first hint of cool in the air. When the temperature drops and I’m feeling chilly, nothing beats pulling on a sweater or fleece, or wrapping up in a fluffy blanket. On cool afternoons I like to fix a cup of tea and slip out to my back yard. Sunshine warming my skin, wrapped in a fleece and sipping on, you guessed it, a cup of pumpkin spice tea. That’s my idea of heaven. Rikki’s idea of heaven in Exposed To Passion is the way her feet feel when they slap the pavement on a head-clearing run. That, and the bristly feel of Sam Kerrigan’s stubble when she runs her hand over his jaw.

So now I have a question for you. What is the one sense you couldn’t live without?

Exposed to Passion

They walked through the shadows individually. Will they emerge into the light together?

Leading a vagabond life as a curator for a traveling photography exhibit translates to a lot of bad days for Rikki Salerno. But her trouble doubles when a careless high school student shoves her into a marsh. Being rescued by teacher Sam Kerrigan should have made things better, but Rikki’s inability to confess her true identity casts a shadow over their budding affair.

When Sam refuses an overly aggressive parent’s marriage proposal, she’s determined to ruin him. Not only does she doctor photos to make it look like Sam’s behaved inappropriately in front of students, she hacks the foundation website to reveal Rikki’s true identity. Faster than the blink of a shutter, Rikki’s focus changes from pursuing her full-color future to the black and white necessity of clearing Sam’s name.

Author Info

Gemma’s favorite desk accessories for many years were a circular wooden token, better known as a ’round tuit,’ and a slip of paper from a fortune cookie proclaiming her a lover of words; some day she’d write a book. All it took was a transfer to the United Kingdom, the lovely English springtime, and a huge dose of homesickness to write her first novel. Once it was completed and sent off with a kiss, even the rejections addressed to ‘Dear Author’ were gratifying. After returning to America, she spent a number of years as a copywriter, dedicating her skills to making insurance and the agents who sell them sound sexy.

Eventually, her full-time job as a writer interfered with her desire to be a writer full-time and she left the world of financial products behind to pursue an avocation as a romance author. Her gamble paid off when she was a 2012 Finalist in the prestigious Golden Pen contest for Romantic Suspense and she received contracts for her first and second book.
