The Genesis of an Idea

A question a lot of authors get is, “Where do you get your ideas?”

I know that “It came to me in a dream” sounds, well, dreamy. But it rarely happens to me. Most dreams that sound really cool in the dead of night look ridiculous in the light of day. I searched my huge Word doc of ideas and found only three dream-inspired ideas. Only one made it to a book.

While I was searching for a plot for my third Justiss Alliance operative, a faint memory of an idea floated into my mind. I trolled my idea doc and found it. I thought I’d share the actual idea as I wrote it just for fun:

8/7/98 – (from a dream) – Romantic suspense

Gwyneth Paltrow lookalike and her fiancé had planned a vacation to a tropical island. As usual, he backed out of it. Like in Sliding Doors, he kind of uses her, takes her for granted. Angry, she decides to go without him. Has a few drinks, flirts with cute guy at bar. Decides she deserves a fling, that it’s time to change her life. But she chickens out (reader knows she’s going to be the same old, no growth).

Next scene, the guy (Jack) is being surprised by his friend, who has procured them entertainment for the evening (since he was bummed about Gwyn). There was something about her, innocence, yet bit of daring. The friend gets his woman and leaves. The pimp then sends in Jack’s woman, though he’s already decided he’s not going through with it (because, hey, he is the hero, after all). Then he sees that it’s Gwyn. She’s obviously drugged (pimp says she’s at his beck and call). Something’s not right. He doesn’t want to take her to the hospital or police, because she could be arrested for drug use or prostitution. So he sits with her all night.

The next morning, she wakes in bed with him, is shocked and scared. He tells her what happened. She says last she remembered she had went to the bathroom. They figure someone date drugged her drink. Go to police, but they threaten to charge Gwyn with drug use and him with pimptom if they press. Jack wants her to go home, but he intends to check into it. (noble, can’t walk away from a fight, won’t be intimidated.)

This all hits a personal note with Gwyn. Someone is drugging women and using them for prostitutes. She was almost used. She’s tired of being used. She’s going to do something about it. Gets strong, grows. Jack is so totally different from her, yet she admires him. By near end of book, fiancé comes looking for her, and she can see she didn’t really love him either. She’s totally different.

That’s how my writer’s mind works. I had the heroine’s internal conflict, the plot, and some general details. Then I had to fit it into my Justiss Alliance theme, an agency that seeks justice outside the bounds of the law. The hero, now Sax, could have just been vacationing at the resort, but I’d already had my last Justiss hero sort of stumbling into a dangerous situation, so I wanted this to be an assignment. So, add in that several American women had reported to the Department of State that they suspected being given date rape drugs at a hedonistic resort on a private Bahamian island (Hm, guess where I got the inspiration for that!), not a lot of evidence, and the need for that evidence before justice could be brought. Then I had fun taking my sexy ladies man and turning him into an overworked business geek for his undercover role, just the kind of guy who might buy a “sure thing.” Throw in a heroine who’s just dumped her cheating boyfriend and is ready to explore her wild side. Stir in a lot of sexual chemistry, a little investigating, and heaping amounts of “required” nakedness, and the dream becomes reality!

Blurb

The courageous men of USA Today bestselling author Tina Wainscott’s Justiss Alliance series never give up and never make a promise they can’t live up to—especially when love is on the line.

The only commitment Saxby Cole has ever made is to the SEALs. He follows a long line of Southern charmers who swear monogamy isn’t in their blood. He’s never met a woman who made him want to swear his allegiance—until, while undercover for a Justiss Alliance assignment, he finds a woman who makes him think twice.

When Jennessy Shaw’s boyfriend dumps her right before their vacation to a hedonistic Caribbean resort, she goes without him to explore her wild side. Throwing caution to the wind, she propositions Saxby—only to suffer his gentle rejection.

When she wakes in Saxby’s room with no memory of the night before, Jennessy discovers his real purpose: to sniff out an operation where women like her are drugged and prostituted to resort guests. She goes from victim to his investigative partner . . . but getting too close to the sexier-than-sin Saxby may be her wildest move yet.

Author Info

USA Today bestselling author Tina Wainscott has always loved the combination of romance and suspense, because nothing complements falling in love better than being hunted down. The author of more than thirty novels and novellas, Wainscott creates characters with baggage, past hurts, and vulnerabilities. They go through hell, find love, and, at the end, find peace in who they are and everything they’ve gone through. And isn’t that what everyone wants?
