Take Me Home, Country Roads

Thanks so much for hosting me today! I’m so excited to celebrate the release of A Cowboy’s Christmas Promise with you!
I’m a huge fan of country music. Huge. It’s taken me quite a long time to admit this, given that I live in a family that alternately blasts eighties rock, current teen pop, and AC/DC on non-stop loop. I love me my Journey and Foreigner with the best of eighties kids, and I’ve learned to cope with One Direction and Taylor Swift, but when I’m alone in the car and actually (gasp) get to choose the station, it’s country all the way.
This all started the first time I got on a plane and went west to visit family in Arizona. For an entire February week, my bedroom window was open and a country music station played softly in the kitchen. Combined with the blue skies, pink houses, and warm breezes, I was ready to call a realtor. To this day, country music brings me back to that relaxing, wonderful winter when I discovered the beauty of a February desert (and realized I should be VERY, very nice to these particular family members so I could come back EVERY February.)
When I set out to write my Whisper Creek series, I wanted to create a setting that would bring readers to that same sort of relaxing, away-from-it-all place I think of every time Brad Paisley comes on the radio, and Montana was a natural choice. At Whisper Creek, cowboys play campfire songs on guitars, they tolerate country karaoke at the town’s one bar, and they travel for hours to see this year’s hottest country artist on summer tour.
Or they whistle. I love whistlers. To me, the sound brings back happy memories of my dad puttering on a woodworking project down cellar, or HIS dad building mini-hope chests in his garage. Whistling is a marker of contentment, of happiness, and it’s one of my favorite sounds.
The hero of A Cowboy’s Christmas promise is a whistler. Daniel whistles at home, in the stables, and in his truck, the tune of a country song always on his lips. As he whistles his way through the book, Hayley falls more and more in love with him, and twenty years from now when she hears those tunes on the radio, I know she’ll travel right back to those heady days of first kisses and first dances and discovering true, forever love.
How about you? Are you a country-radio fan? Or is it like nails on a chalkboard to you?

A Cowboy’s Christmas Promise
By: Maggie McGinnis
Releasing November 18th, 2014

In a captivating novel spiced with holiday magic—perfect for fans of Rachel Gibson, Susan Mallery, and Molly O’Keefe—a rugged Montana man mends a Northeast girl’s jaded heart.

Boston veterinarian Hayley Scampini tends the city’s pampered pets but dreams of the rural life of a country vet. She’s single and determined to stay that way, convinced that love isn’t permanent enough to trust. Then a vacation to the Whisper Creek dude ranch introduces her to Daniel McKee, a sexy single dad who runs the kind of veterinary practice she aspires to—and rattles her conviction to keep men at a distance.

Managing a thriving practice, coping with the loss of his wife, and fighting a custody battle with his in-laws over his twin daughters, Daniel couldn’t be more overwhelmed. Hayley is a godsend, accompanying him in the field and winning over his girls. It doesn’t take Daniel long to realize he’s falling for this woman, hard and fast. So before Hayley returns to Boston, he extracts a promise: that she will return to Whisper Creek for Christmas. It’s the perfect time and place to show Hayley that the promise of a beautiful life together is something she can believe in.
