Take it away Ashlyn…
Katherina and Petruchio. Lizzie and Darcy. Scarlett and Rhett. Scully and Mulder. Han and Leia. Ron and Hermione. These couples spat. They argue. Each half views the world through a different lens, and when those views come to light, they clash. They’re classic bickering couples, and when they come together, you can be sure of one thing. Sparks will fly.
They’re fun to watch, as they sort out their differences. Because underlying all that bickering is a tension of another sort, and when those feelings finally come to light, well… sparks fly, and we love watching it happen.
Over the course of a story, these couples also transform each other. They may begin as polar opposites, but somewhere in all that bickering, they gravitate toward each other. Somehow they meet in the middle. Take Ron and Hermione from the Harry Potter series, for example. She starts out as a nervous, uptight swot, and he’s far too laid back. Along the way, he teaches her to lighten up, while she straightens him up—to an extent, because neither character loses their essential personality through all that.
In my most recent release, What a Lady Requires, Emma and Rowan don’t bicker all the time, but they do start out viewing the world on opposite sides of the spectrum. She’s a little like Hermione, in fact. Socially awkward to a point, dead serious when it comes to business matters, and a genius with numbers. Rowan, on the other hand, can’t be bothered with all those details—in fact, he’d never admit it, but he likely suffers from dyscalculia—but he moves through society with a great deal of ease.
Forced together by an arranged marriage, the pair must learn to deal with their differences, transform, and quite possibly find they have a few things in common. Such as mutual attraction and even passion.
Who are some of your favorite bickering couples?
What a Lady Requires
The Eton Boys Trilogy # 3
By: Ashlyn Macnamara
Releasing March 31st, 2015
Perfect for fans of Julia Quinn, Eloisa James, and Sabrina Jeffries, Ashlyn Macnamara’s blazing hot novel tells the story of mismatched newlyweds who discover a simmering connection.
Unlike every other proper young lady, Miss Emma Jennings views marrying well as little more than a means to an end. Such a merger would provide her industrious father with social credibility, and Emma with a chunk of her vast inheritance. Emma’s practical views are shattered, however, when her father ties her to the fabulously handsome ne’er-do-well Rowan Battencliffe, a man she loathes on sight—from the smile that promises all manner of wickedness to the way he ogles her with those striking blue eyes.
Deep in debt, especially to his wine merchant, Rowan figures the sooner he gets his finances in order, the sooner he can go back to doing what he does best: burning through ridiculous sums of cash. Which is why Rowan agrees to marry the merchant’s daughter, a prim and proper woman with delightful curves and an ample dowry. But Emma seems to think it’s her business to reform him! Their marriage is a tinderbox—and it’s just too tempting to resist playing with fire.

Ashlyn lives in the wilds of suburbia outside Montreal with her husband and two teenaged daughters. When not writing, she looks for other excuses to neglect the housework, among them knitting, reading and wasting time on the internet in the guise of doing research.
