The Devilish Mr. Danvers by Vivienne Lorret

Vivienne Lorret answers the question…

What types of research and sources did you use for this book?

Thank you for having me here today!

I have a local librarian friend who hooks me up with all sorts of material. Her research skills are amazing! In fact, she must belong to a secret society, because the rest of us don’t have her connections.

For THE DEVILISH MR. DANVERS, I researched the history of stained glass and glass art. Since Rafe Danvers came from a family of artists, I thought it was important that he carry on the tradition, but in his own unique way.

I’ve always been fascinated by those massive stained glass windows that you typically see in old churches and cathedrals. My librarian borrowed some great books from college libraries, which detailed the history of the craft. After reading those, and not wanting my beloved hero to suffer from madness due to lead poisoning, I decided to make him a glass blower. After reading as much as I could, I then turned to Youtube and discovered a plethora of truly gifted glass artists who demonstrated their craft.

From there, I delved into the history of Westminster Abby, discovered quite a few things that switched on the light bulb over my head (or more aptly for the time period: lit a taper over my head), and after a small amount of artistic license, Rafe and Hedley’s story was born.

For the first time in her life, Hedley Sinclair holds the keys to her own future. She’s inherited the crumbling Greyson Park, but the disrepair does nothing to dissuade her. No one will ever lock her up again or attempt to take away what’s hers. No one except Rafe Danvers—the charming, fiendish man from Fallow Hall. He’s determined to claim Greyson Park, but if Hedley isn’t careful, he’ll claim her heart as well.

Rafe has every intention of ridding Greyson Park of the conniving Sinclairs, once and for all. The last thing he expects is to find the beguiling Hedley Sinclair—the younger sister of his former fiancée—standing in his way. With drastic measures called for, he plans to marry her off in order to regain control of the estate. The only trouble is, he can’t seem to stop seducing her. Even worse, he can’t help falling in love with her.

TEASER

Gritting his teeth, Rafe strode out of the solicitor’s office in Cheapside. Black clouds filled with soot and rain rumbled overhead. A fierce storm brewed. Both outside and within him. “I refuse to believe it!” He’d thought coming to London would bring him better news. Beside him, his long-time friend, Ethan Weatherstone secured his brown tophat against a gust of wind. “I’m afraid it’s true. Miss Hedley Sinclair inherited Greyson Park.” “And the contract I signed along with Lady Claudia Sinclair—as it was overseen by a steward in her own employ—is essentially worthless.” Weatherstone shook his head in sympathy. “I’m sorry, my friend.” That witch had stolen two thousand pounds from him! Not only that, but she’d demanded eight thousand more by year’s end before he could occupy the house. The worst part—he’d been willing to do it! Disgusted and angry, Rafe climbed into the carriage and tapped against the roof for the driver. “Hawthorne Manor,” he instructed, but quickly changed his mind. “Better make that Danbury Lane, instead.”
