Fun Facts ~ Learn something new about me and I’ll learn something new about you

YAY! It’s time for another Fun Facts 🙂 What is Fun Facts you ask? Well, I’ll share a little tidbit about something in my life and if you want to chime in and share from yours that’d be great. If you don’t, that’s all good, too. lol

No matter my age I always find this time of year magical. It seems like the holidays bring out the best in people. They are more giving, polite, respectful … and even happier.

One of the best parts about this season is really the giving. To tell you the truth, I’m a bit uncomfortable being on the receiving end of gift giving, but I do love to give. I’m not sure if I’m right in my assumption, but I believe most people like a handmade gift. I love to bake a few things and share them with family and friends in cute little tins.

all done

We also have a newly acquired tradition in my family that we started about 7 or so years ago. Time is so short around the holidays that we usually plan this about a week before Christmas. My husband organizes it because it’s “his” thing. We choose a different restaurant each year (one that we haven’t been to before) where we meet with all our kids and their significant others, my sister and her 2 kids, and my brother and his wife. It’s a small gathering of maybe 13 to 15 people. This year we decided to forgo the fancy eatery and let loose. We ended up going to Dave and Buster’s. OMG…so much fun.

the girls

While there I managed to hand out my tins of goodies, we ate some really good food … which surprised me because, well, come on…it’s a game place. But the food was awesome. Anyway, before we hit the floor to play some fun games I handed out my tins of goodies. There’s nothing better than getting a gift that is made with love. And I was good this year and managed to not sample things to much. lol

us

So, I’m sharing a few pics from our day at Dave and Buster’s and also the tins of yummies I gave out that included Christmas crack, mint swirl brownies, chocolate chip bars, and frosted peanut butter oatmeal bars (which have become my new favorite). my brother

me and ken

I’d love it if you’d share a Christmas time tradition that you do at your house. Do you bake for friends, family, and neighbors, spend time volunteering, open one gift on Christmas Eve, leave milk and cookies for Santa, light candles in remembrance, do a cookie exchange?

One of my all time favorite recipes for New Year’s Eve parties is a super easy–and I mean easy–dip recipe that is made in the crock pot.

We used to celebrate each New Year’s Eve by having friends and family over for a rowdy game night. Everyone would bring a dish to pass and I’d make several snacks, dips, and finger foods and we’d play games and laugh and get as loud as we wanted until the wee hours of the morning.

I admit it’s been a few years since we’ve thrown a big bash because I now work every New Year’s Day–which makes late nights impossible. BUT, someday I hope to return to those glory days of staying up all night and doing things my own way! lol

Anyway, I’d love to share this easy peasy recipe with you for BEAN DIP!

1 Large container sour cream
2 Cans of Campbell’s Bean with Bacon soup
1 Package taco seasoning
1 Package shredded cheddar cheese

Blend all items in slow cooker for at least 4 to 5 hours. Stir occasionally. I leave several small dip bowls beside the slow cooker so that everyone can fill their own and have a variety of tortilla chips in various bowls on the counter. This is so easy and so yummy….and it’s even delicious leftover the next day. Just pop it in the microwave and enjoy for a 2nd round!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

What’s a favorite treat you enjoy on New Year’s Eve? Let me know in the comments!

BLURB:

 Saute, simmer, and flambé…

Jill Adgate wants three things from life: a successful catering business, the devoted love of an exceptional man, and a family. What she has is no job, a mounting pile of bills, and her outspoken best friend—who sets her up on a blind date with the man who inadvertently ruined Jill’s life.

 Chet Castle is a prosperous businessman who has everything, except the ability to trust. Burned by a money-hungry fiancée, he refuses to get involved with any relationship that has a shelf life longer than a head of lettuce.

Intrigued by her ambition–and determined to get her in bed–Chet offers Jill the chance of a lifetime: Work for him for the next eight weeks as his live-in chef and he’ll help her get her catering business off the ground. When sparks fly in the kitchen, Jill realizes what’s cooking with her commitment-phobic employer is a recipe for disaster…but it’s just too tasty to not take a bite.

The excerpt I’m sharing has a little taste from both Jill and Chet’s perspective. ENJOY!

EXCERPT:

Her body hummed as his smile wavered. Although he wore sunglasses, she’d bet her last dollar his gaze swept across her chest, lingering on the betrayal of her pert nipples pushing against the fabric of her suit.

Until this moment, shyness had never been a trait she possessed. Air stalled in her lungs, her palms grew sweaty, and she itched to cover herself with a towel. Even though her replica vintage swimsuit hid more than most sets of women’s underwear, she felt too exposed. She turned to the side slightly and folded her legs up. Not that it helped, but it made her feel a bit less exposed.

Chet slid his feet from his sandals, brushing a hand through his hair. The heat from the sun wasn’t the only thing scorching her skin. She trickled several droplets of water over her arms, but she couldn’t drag her focus from his toned flesh.

Jill soaked in his ripped abs and the obvious package of goodies covered by his brown swimsuit—the same sexy brown as his hair. Damn, did a man have a right to fill out a pair of swimming trunks like that? Flecks of hair, just enough to give him a manly

appeal, covered the etched muscles of his long, tan legs.

She licked her lips, hoping she could still speak. “Do you want

some privacy?” Yes, say yes. She needed an excuse to make an

escape without coming off like someone desperate to be making

an exit.

…

Hell no, he didn’t want privacy. Through the shield of his sunglasses, he inspected her body from the tips of her pink-painted toenails to the top of her brightly flowered swimming cap. Did people still actually wear those things? “No, you look comfortable. Stay and enjoy the day.”

“Oh…are you sure?”

“Sure.”

Amazed at his own ability to talk without his tongue hitting the cement, Chet turned to throw his towel and sunglasses on a nearby lounge chair. Damn. The red and white polka-dot halter-style suit featured a tight bodice, but her slender hips and shapely thighs hiding beneath a matching skirt grabbed his attention until all oxygen left his

blood. Even showing less skin than the average girl on the beach,

she far exceeded sexy and alluring.

Get a grip, Castle. She’s off limits, no matter how delectable.

He turned and stepped onto the diving board. He bounced along the surface as he made his way over the water. When he looked at Jill’s bathing cap covering her head, he held back his grin. The neon rubber flowers reminded him of something his

grandmother would’ve worn, but there the similarity ended. Everything beneath that cap was far from making him think of Grandma.

Today I’m sharing an old time favorite cookie recipe. I know everyone has a favorite sugar cookie recipe that has become tradition…and this one is the tradition at our house.

~~~~~ENJOY~~~~~
CREAM CHEESE SUGAR COOKIES
First the boring stuff:  Calories 88…..%Calories/fat 47%…..Carbs 10.5 grams…..Cholest 13 mgrams…..Protein 1.2 grames…..Fat 4.7 grams…..Fiber 23 grams…..Sodium 42 grams
Now the good stuff:  Ingredients:
4 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening
1 (8oz) package cream cheese
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla
PREPERATION:
Combine flour, baking powder, salt and nutmet…set aside.  Cream together butter and shortening; add cream cheese and sugar, beating until fluffy.  Add egg and vanilla; beat well.  Gradually beat in flour mixture.  Divide dough in half.  Cover and chill 1 to 2 hours.  On lightly floured surface, roll dough 1/8 inch thick (my preference but I leave it a bit thicker because I like the cookies thicker and for some reason they are almost cake like…soft and yummy).  Cut with cookie cutters.  Place on ungreased baking sheet.  Bake at 375 for 7-9 minutes.  Cool on wire rack and frost…if you have any left.  LOL…they are delish unfrosted or decorated.
Hope you enjoy this recipe….they are awesome!
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!
(Thank you to the amazing Amanda Usen for baking, decorating, and photographing the cream cheese sugar cookies…As you can see from the picture she is a professional and makes my attempts at decorating look like a four year old did the job…so I posted her pictures instead of mine…lol)
Please let me know in the comments what your favorite holiday cookie recipe is…and if you want to go the extra mile feel free to share the recipe!
The recipe I’m sharing is one I make every year. One year I decided to make another punch and my family wasn’t happy…yes, this punch is that AMAZING! Since that year I haven’t veered from my Medley Punch Madness and promise I never will 🙂
~~ENJOY~~
Christine’s Fruit Medley Punch
2 – 10 oz pkgs frozen strawberries in syrup, thawed
3 cups apricot nectar – chilled
3 cups cold water
1 cup Real Lemon Juice
1 – 6 oz can frozen Orange Juice – thawed
1 cup sugar
1 – 32 oz bottle ginger all – chilled
In blender puree strawberries. In large punhc bowl combine all ingredients except ginger ale and ice ring (recipe for the ice ring will follow and is optional but so festive). Stir until sugar dissolves. Slowly pour in gingerale. Add ice ring.
Optional Ice Ring
Take a bundt pan and arrange apricot halves, mint leaves (fresh) and whole strawberries in ring mold. Add small amount of water (I also add some of the nectar juice), freeze. I have a deep bundt pan and after I freeze once I do another layer and freeze again.
I wish I had a picture to share, but I will definitely take a picture on Thanksgiving and post, but I hope you will all try this recipe and add it to your holiday tradition! HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!
And I’d love it if you’d share what favorite family dish you traditionally make for your Thanksgiving table that would flip your family out if it weren’t included this year in the comments 🙂
Friday Fun Facts
Hi and welcome to Friday Fun Facts!  Come play along and learn something new about me, and I’ll learn something new about you.
Can you believe it’s the last Friday of 2011?  This year flew by, but of course I tend to believe that the older I get the faster they go. 🙂
This weekend we transition from the year 2011 to 2012!  WOW, how incredible is that?
I used to make New Years Resolutions, but soon discovered my resolution usually seemed to be a bit unrealistic.  Something that normally was out of reach or I couldn’t stick to or a goal I couldn’t meet.  I had good intentions, but things could get in the way of those resolutions and make them unobtainable.
How did I feel then?  Well, like most people who don’t meet their resolutions…disappointed, let down…a failure.  And there can be enough of that in everyday life without us putting the pressure of a resolution on ourselves.  So I guess you could say my last resolution was no more resolutions. lol  Why did I have to use the year end marker to improve myself anyway….so there!  If I needed to change something about myself, meet a goal, shoot for something in particular on my wish list…I could just try.  And I could do it any time I felt the urge to go for it 🙂
But, while I was on facebook yesterday I was scrolling through the feeds and someone posted a really interesting comment.  They no longer made resolutions either (which, in itself isn’t that uncommon) but instead they chose a WORD for the year.  My take on it was that she picked a single word which described how she felt her year would go, something that might motivate her or reflect on things happening in her life.
Hmm…interesting, right?
Her word was CHANGE.  Per her comment, “as in embrace the change.”  She mentioned her family was due for a lot of change this upcoming year—graduations, new additions— and it was exciting.
Just reading her comment was in some small way uplifting and I really latched onto her idea about no resolutions but a WORD.   One word that describes your mood, your life, your year.  How cool is that?  I also liked the fact there isn’t pressure, like in making a resolution.  No worries you’ll fail or mess up or disappoint yourself or someone else.
Okay, there is the small pressure of choosing your one word…lol…but it’s nothing that will make you feel like a failure if you come up with more than one and have to narrow down your options.  Right?  🙂
So, I carried that little niggle of the WORD idea around with me all day yesterday, trying to come up with my own word.  I had several that I liked.  Several I felt would share what the upcoming year reflected, or what I thought would happen.
I finally decided on my WORD.
HOPE.
Hope for my family and friends and myself.  Hope for what dreams we’ll have that will be realized.  Hope for achievements and goals we desire.  Hope!  That one little, four letter word speaks volumes.  It makes me feel…well, hopeful!  Excited for the upcoming year, the possibilities.  For the many things in life which can be tied to that one word.
 Hope.
Which brings me to today’s Friday Fun Fact question….Drum roll please….
If you chose a word that would describe your upcoming year, or a word you HOPE will describe your year in 2012, what word would you choose and why?
Looking forward to reading your answers!
And here’s my HOPE for all of you….Have a Healthy and Happy New Year!
